Technician Certification Questions

Who should complete technician laser safety certification?

Technician certification is intended for personnel who operate, assist with, maintain, service, or work near laser systems. The appropriate certification depends on the setting and how the laser is used.

Does the certification cover Class 4 lasers?

LSC technician courses include laser safety concepts applicable to systems through Class 4. Class 4 systems can present direct-beam, reflected-beam, skin, fire, and other hazards, so employers must also provide equipment-specific instruction and implement site-specific controls.

OSHA identifies Class 4 lasers as potential eye, skin, reflected-beam, and fire hazards. OSHA laser hazard classifications

Does laser-cleaning certification authorize someone to operate a machine?

The industrial course provides laser safety certification for personnel working with laser cleaning and ablation systems. It does not replace manufacturer instruction, equipment-specific operator qualification, or an employer’s authorization to operate a particular machine.

What is the difference between technician and LSO certification?

Technician certification is for personnel who use or work around laser systems. LSO certification addresses broader responsibilities such as hazard evaluation, control selection, procedures, records, and laser safety program oversight.

Is the certification completed online?

Yes. Written and video certification formats are delivered online and can be completed using a compatible computer, tablet, or mobile device.

Is this a license?

No. The certificate documents completion of the selected online certification and assessment. It does not replace a state or occupational license where one applies.

Standards Basis

LSC technician certification content is based on the ANSI Z136 guidance applicable to each work environment:

OSHA identifies the ANSI Z136 series as voluntary consensus guidance related to worker protection. These standards support laser safety program development but are not themselves OSHA regulations. See OSHA’s laser safety standards overview.
