Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer FAQs

What is Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification?

A Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification course provides structured education for personnel responsible for overseeing laser safety in aesthetic and cosmetic treatment environments. LSC’s Cosmetic LSO curriculum covers hazard evaluation, control measures, PPE, warning signs, non-beam hazards, laser-generated airborne contaminants, fire hazards, eye and skin exposure, and laser classifications through Class 4.

The course is designed for managers, lead technicians, and other personnel assigned responsibility for administering a cosmetic facility’s laser safety program.

Who should complete Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification?

A facility using Class 3B or Class 4 cosmetic lasers should designate an appropriately qualified person to administer the laser safety program and oversee applicable controls. Depending on the organization, this may include a manager, lead laser technician, clinical supervisor, or other qualified individual assigned Laser Safety Officer responsibilities.

The LSO’s responsibilities may include hazard evaluation, procedures, PPE selection, controlled areas, warning signs, documentation, incident response, certification oversight, and periodic review of laser safety controls. State requirements can vary, so facilities should also confirm any jurisdiction-specific LSO, licensing, registration, or supervision requirements.

Can I get Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification online?

Yes. LSC offers online Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification in both written and video formats. The courses are designed for remote, self-paced completion without requiring participants to attend an off-site classroom.

Both formats cover the applicable Cosmetic LSO curriculum and lead to a certificate of completion after the required course material and assessments are successfully completed.

How much does Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification cost?

LSC currently offers both written and video Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification options. Current pricing is listed on the Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer Certification page.

Because pricing and available course formats can change, customers should refer to the current course page when selecting their certification.

What does a Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer do?

A Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer (LSO) administers the facility’s laser safety program and has responsibility for evaluating and controlling laser hazards. Typical responsibilities can include reviewing laser classifications, evaluating the treatment environment, establishing or approving control measures, selecting appropriate PPE and eyewear, maintaining procedures and records, specifying warning signs, supporting incident response, and monitoring the facility’s laser safety program.

OSHA’s laser safety guidance describes the LSO as having authority to monitor and enforce laser hazard controls and to perform knowledgeable evaluation and control of laser hazards.

Does Cosmetic LSO certification cover Class 4 cosmetic lasers?

Yes. LSC’s Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer certification covers laser systems up to and including Class 4 lasers. The curriculum includes hazard classification, environmental controls, protective equipment, warning signs, laser-generated airborne contaminants, secondary radiation, fire hazards, and other topics relevant to higher-hazard cosmetic laser systems.

Class 4 systems can present serious eye, skin, fire, and secondary hazards and require substantial hazard evaluation and control measures. The facility remains responsible for applying site-specific controls appropriate to its equipment, procedures, personnel, and operating environment.

Course Development and Technical Review

The Cosmetic Laser Safety Officer Certification is developed and reviewed by Nate Wilkerson . Course content addresses foundational laser hazards, control measures, and laser safety program oversight for cosmetic and aesthetic settings. It does not provide clinical or cosmetic-procedure qualification.
